A group of shipwrecked slaves lead a rebellion against the Spanish in 16th century Panama. Based on the true story of the Bayano Rebellion. Coming Aug 2027 from Simon & Schuster Canada in Canada, and Counterpoint Press in the USA.
In April 2025 I did a 4-day 3-night hike across Panama along what remains of the historic Camino Real. In the 16th century, the Spanish were pulling enormous amounts of wealth out of South America, but had no direct routes to ship back to Spain. Instead they shipped up the coast to Panama City on the Pacific side, unloaded onto mule carts that were used to haul the stolen wealth across the country on the Camino Real, then to be loaded back onto ships at Nombre de Dios (and later Portobelo). It was a colonial pre-cursor to the Panama Canal, and the attacks on the road by Bayano's rebels were impactful to the entire Spanish empire. Thank you to Rick Morales at Jungle Treks for guiding me. Here are a few photos.
